Phonics Boards

Phonics is a tool we commonly use in seventh grade ESL education, and then occasionally in eighth grade or later.  When students are learning to read, sometimes you tell them, “Sound it out.”  If they know what the sounds of each letter are, perhaps they’ll be able to do so.

Phonics can’t do everything, because while there are only five vowels, English has twenty or more vowel sounds.  And some words are sight words, so you just have to memorize them one at a time.

Here are six phonics boards: PDF & ODG. And here are teachers’ copies with example words for each sound: PDF & ODG.
